Watering plants in the hot summer is basically useless. Some simple tips to make sure the water goes where it is most needed. - Water in the evening when the water is less likely to evaporate
- Put plastic piping or cut off plastic bottles into the soil, leaving it about 2" above the soil level when planting so that water can get directly to the roots
- If using a "soakthru" irrigation pipe, cover the pipe with soil or a weed preventing fabric to stop evaporation
- In hanging baskets and pots use a water retaining gel to ensure they do not dry out.

Or do what we do: once you've knocked the seedling out of its pot, plant it up and then 'plant' the empty pot to the side of it. Creates a nice little hole (pot hole???) into which you can water over the seasons.
