I`m not sure this shouldn`t go in poultry...och well... I have, in me incubator at the moment, some thirty quail eggs. I`m assured they are fertile for the most part, but due to two extended power cuts I have no idea how long they were without power and if that has done any damage. So I`ll have to wait til they hatch...if any do. I bought the eggs off Ebay. It seems to be the only way I can get eggs. I once bought a dozen pheasant eggs from Ebay but none of them hatched, and that had nothing to do with my incubator or method of looking after them. Hopefully these quails will do better. they aren`t the usual quails though...these are Chinese painted, tiny wee things and the chicks are about the size of bumble bees. Apparently one thing they do is, when frightened or startled, shoot straight up into the air. This, apparently, is called `bonking`. And many a quail has killed itself by breaking its tiny neck by hitting the ceiling of its hutch so hard. So Blu will have to build me a quail hutch with curtain netting at the top so the birds can bonk safely. Not the brightest of birds, quail, are they? Anyone else had any quail experience? I don`t intend to sell the eggs..they`re tiny plus I have no idea why folks value quail eggs..they just taste like small chicken eggs!

My brother bought some Quail eggs off Ebay, out of 20, 18 hatched, then 2 died when his infra red lamp blew! So he has 16 left, which wasn't too bad. Dad used to keep a couple for ornamental value. The only thing dumber than Quail are Guinea Fowl and they are stupid! As for poultry, I don't know whether they are poultry or game? I know they are damned expensive in restaurants!

we used to breed quails and sell the eggs and birds to local snazzy expensive restaurants for stupid prices. dont know why people like them to eat or keep. it was a strange money making idea that ended up being pricey to keep then sell them. of course we have commen old garden quails. they had to be kept in a very low run. because they tended to knock themselves out. with plenty of cover. and they seem to die at a whim, no it wasnt us, they were very timid birds and liked to drop dead. i may have a book somewhere about breeding them ice, i will have a look.

Quite often raised by Keepers for shoots later in the year.

I saw my brothers quail at the weekend so I'm going to give them a try myself. the council say no poultry or livestock...these are game! Also "pets", no different to a bloody canary. Apart from I'm gonna sell them after. gotta get hold of an incubator first though.
