i was in bed when mum came up, to tell me the work fox.
the first thing i thought was, oh god it got wumpy and dumpy who are now in a small run outside.
the fox had got into the chickens again.
last time he got in, with reinforced the bottom wire, that didnt stop the fox because it jumped, yes jumped over the top.
Mum was in the run with the fox, she was between him and the chickens and believe it or not the fox was still trying to get them, even with her there.
our dog tessa appeared, mum didnt want her in with the fox, so shut the gate. Foxes are nasty buggers and tessa isnt that big, it would have been a big fight if she had got in.
so tessa ran around the run, the fox at one point was eye to eye with the dog, and we have never seen tessa so fierce.
the fox made an escape and legged it towards the same fence he had jumped over, and with one big leap the fox had gone into the undergrowth with tessa on its tail.
one of the chickens were gone, feathers were everywhere.
Mum woke me up with that story.
The chickens were really stressed out, but because im the mad chicken lady they calmed down when i came in. ages ago i made them a little corner with logs and a chair (for me) and they were all perched on it. I gave them some corn and they calmed down.
Phil came down not long after, and he went for a walk and went out to check the run again (we were out there every quarter and hour) he shouted FOX and we saw the little bastard again.
We dont own a gun.
we shouted again at the fox and the pheasants and geese joined in.
suddenly phil came rushing inm, theres a chicken out of the run, he puffed.
we thought shite there must be a hole in the fence.
it was ruth, the chicken we thought had been eaten, looking very sore around the bum area. The fox must have grabbed her by the tail feathers, she was plucked all around the back, she must has escaped. kept low and came when she heard my voice.
She is one brave little chicken.
the other chickens wont leave her side now. bless her im going to give her a little ham medal (she loves ham)
now we are having to reinforce the top fence, so what was 6ft will now be 8ft. and they say foxes dont jump.
