The weather was a bit milder today and so I decided to plant those trees I bought. "Dig an 'ole in the ground and drop em in and fill in the 'ole and that's it." No chance!
I had to clear the area of weeds and fallen leaves and rake it all over. Then I had to get a barrowload of compost from compost bin number 1 and add a few shovelfulls to each hole and then get the trees and my special 'grovelling pad' (garden kneeler) and so I planted......However.....Just as I was about to plant, along came 'Mum' the hen pheasant. She strolled up to me and wiped her beak on the grass and looked impatient and so, I had to go to the kitchen and bring out the peanut box. When I got back, 'Mum was over by the first hole poking around and inspecting it. Typical female! I can't do nuffin right. So I threw her some nuts and carried on, while she supervised me.
Two silver birch. One twisted willow. One Monterey cypress. One Bay laurel, which was in a ceramic pot and was looking decidedly peaky. So I planted it and said, "Grow! Be Free!" ;D Hopefully tomorrow, I'll plant the remaining five Monterey cypresses in containers and put them in the front garden for a year or two, as they are still quite small, then I'll transfer them to their permanent positions along with a large measuring stick and a big sign saying, 'Cut off tops when 9 feet tall!' I'm buggered if I'm going to have the same trouble with them as I'm having with those leylandii.
Oi Stormy! I put an advert up for 'Tree Fellers.' Two Irishmen arrived and aologised for being one short. ;D
